It’s with a heavy heart…
…that I announce after 2 years of serving the burlesque community, ShakeItDoll.com is taking down its calendar.
I started this site in October 2007 with the intention to provide a service that I personally wanted to see on offer. Whilst there were many burlesque event calendars on the internet, there were none that purposefully set out to list ALL events taking place.
I had dreams of learning more .php coding in order to make the site more easy to run, but as my own burlesque career took off and simultaneously the number of burlesque events in the UK multiplied at an astronomical rate, I never found the time to obtain those much needed skills.
I’d hoped that running this site may open doors for me with regard to web-design, but over the course of the last two years, I’ve come to find that web-design doesn’t ignite my interest as much as other hobbies of mine.
For the last few months I’ve been listing an average of 3-4 events per day – sourcing and listing them taking up approximately 1 hour of my time per day. I estimate around 90% of the events listed on this site are events I’ve found online, and only the odd 10% are user-submitted. In return I’ve found very few money-making opportunities from this site – the ad space wasn’t very popular and few promoters ever offered me guestlist in return for listing their event unrequested (thanks to those that did – notably Keda Breeze at Hoochie Coochie)
Why not make the site so users can submit their own event details for immediate publication?
Well, firstly, this is where more .php skills are needed. Secondly, there are many sites out there that already offer this service. ShakeItDoll was always about listing as many events as possible. The site would lose its edge if it was to be user-maintained.
What will you be doing instead of ShakeItDoll
In the new year I will be, most likely, launching a new site under the “ShakeItDoll” name/domain. It will be very much affiliated with burlesque, but this new venture will prove to be a better investment of my time. I also intend to write articles for 21st Century PinUps a little more frequently in order to add to the collection of written resources about burlesque that I’d like to pen.
My move away from ShakeItDoll as a listing site is the end of an era for me personally, but it feels like the right time. I need to continue to open new doors for myself and set myself new challenges. Sadly ShakeItDoll as it stands seems to have reached a dead end.

As part of Jarvis Cocker’s 3 day open art event in Shoreditch, British Burlesque Legend Jo King will be teaching a burlesque lesson accompanied by improvised live music provided by Jarvis and his band.
This event is free – but please do dress up if you can. You also need to wear a dress or skirt to allow ease of movement and shoes with a heel. There is no striptease involved – just learning how to bump and grind like a pro!

Dont miss out on this fantastic opportunity to do a burlesque workshop with a difference, This course is designed for ladies new to burlesque to make the most of what you have, while giving you enough confidence to show how sexy you really are. This is a two hour workshop. This unique workshop is being held by scarlet fever from channel 4″s faking it, who herself has been trained by the best in the burlesque world, such as the lovely miss Immodesty Blaize, Dita von Teese , and world renowned dancer Wayne Sleep.
Please bring along with you a pair of sexy high heel shoes, feather boa, long opera style gloves & a long sleeved dressing gown with a belt and a long sleeved shirt or blouse that buttons up at the front , also long handled parasol or umbrella. Ladies please feel free to wear what you feel comfortable wearing when you are undertaking the workshop. Please remember to bring your favourite outfit or underwear to wear for the photoshoot. The majority of my participants usually wear frilly knickers, high heels, fishnet tights a corset or basque type top for the workshop, so this could be the outfit you choose to be photographed in.
After your workshop this is followed by a professional hair stylist who will work her magic on your locks (no cutting involved) followed by make up session by a professional make up artist during this she will explain how to get the best results from your own make up bag!!! Followed by a photoshoot with a professional photographer who will bring out your own inner burlesque goddess, you will also receive two 10 x 8″ prints included in the price.
The pamper package is £85 There is a limit of 8 people so spaces are limited so book quickly to avoid disappointment! This package can be purchased as a gift for a loved one via a voucher which can be redeemed on a date of your choice (subject to availability).
