Dr Sketchy’s Crimewave, Belfast (06.09.09)
As described in the event’s mailing list update:
Next Dr Sketchy Sunday 6th September:
“Crime Wave” Theme
“Beatuty, Buffoonery and Burlesque clashes with Chalk, Crayons and Charcoal”
From Policewoman to The Wire, via Bogart on the trail, Jack Lemon and Cary Grant on the run, Harrelson and Lewis as natural born killers and Reno and Oldman’s battle of wits; Dr Sketchy’s present a night of crime for your drawing pleasure.
Dr Sketchy’s takes ‘life’ drawing and finally injects some life into it via a heady mishmash of music, burlesque, comedy, performance, silly games and even sillier prizes. Our burlesque stars will be selecting their favourite sketches with prizes generously supplied by Art and Hobby of Victoria Square in Belfast.
Don’t worry if you can’t muster up a masterpiece – the main focus is to have fun trying. So if you’re looking for something different, Dr Sketchy’s is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Dr. Sketchy’s is what happens when cabaret meets art school. Dr. Sketchy’s is the little Brooklyn event that became a movement. Founded in 2005 by artist Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy’s asked a simple question: Why can’t drawing naked people be sexy? Molly, herself an art student and model, combed New York to find the most beautiful burlesque dancers, the most bizarre circus freaks, and the most rippling hunks of man.
Then she let ordinary members of the public draw them for three hours. Interspersed with posing are comedy skits and ridiculous drawing contests (best left handed drawing? Best incorporation of a woodland animal?) where you can win booze or prizes. Before long, artists across the world wanted in on Molly’s evening of decadence.
Starting in Norfolk, Virginia, but soon spreading from Hollywood to London to Melbourne, Dr Sketchy’s began popping up across the globe, and now it’s here – first Sunday of every month at Belfast’s Menagerie Bar.
